Just a really Nice day
Sunday June 9, 2019. Kirksville, MO to Quincy, IL. 76 miles
Ascent= 1,971 feet. Descent= 2,165 feet Cumulative= 2,091 miles
Breakfast ended up being served an hour later than everyone anticipated but we still left within 15 minutes of our usual departure time to immediately encounter more of the same type of hills we had been seeing for the past 2 days. But these rollers gradually mellowed out and mostly disappeared within the first 30 or so miles and we enjoyed a relatively flat ride as we approached the flooding mighty Mississippi River.
The flooding caused the most minor of detours for us. There are separate bridges for both eastbound and a westbound traffic into and out of Quincy, and our eastbound bridge was all but under water in an area that is usually nowhere near the river bank. As a result we were shunted onto the westbound bridge, which now had one lane of traffic in each direction, with a few feet left over for intrepid bikers. It was really not a problem for us, and we exited the bridge onto the street which led to our hotel.
While waiting for our rooms to be ready, I was once again joined by family. This time my niece, Anna Bender, and her husband Jeff and their children Riely and Caden arrived after driving all the from St.Louis, a 2 hour drive, a really long way for recent graduates from pre-school and second grade to travel to see someone who I'm sure they didn't remember. These little cuties had made signs saying things like "Way to go Jeff Page", "2,000 miles" and "7th state line". I only wish I was a little bit more tech-savvy to share their pictures, but I've exceeded my electronic device frustration limit for tonight.
Anna and Jeff were nice enough to transport a unwashed, sweaty and grimy biker to a Culver' frozen custard for a hamburger and a chocolate malt. Riely and Caden had frozen custard, but their parents.abstained. Thank you Bender family, it was a real treat to have you visit me.
We have now ridden more than 2,000 miles, crossed the Mississippi, and with that we did cross our 7th state line and are in our 8th state.
We have a 106 mile ride tomorrow, so I'm off to bed and to watch the Stanley Cup Final.
