On to Champaign and a Rest Day
Tuesday June 11, 2019. Springfield, IL to Champaign, IL. 89 miles
Ascent/Descent= 1,428 feet/1,245 feet. Cumulative= 2,391 miles
(Including rest day miles)
The bike from Springfiedl to Champaign was pretty much what I think of Illinois south of the Chicago area, flat with a lot of corn. There are still fields that are not even plowed yet due to flood residual, but more and more fields are planted, many that will have corn well over knee high by the 4th of July. Are 1st SAG stop was in Chestnut, IL which has a plaque identifying it as the geographic center of the state. It is otherwise a very typical tiny Illinois town. Our second SAG was at at Casey's gas station. Casey's is regional known for pretty decent gas station pizza, and most of us have a slice or two.
Champaign is the hometown of Peyton Kaiser our 23 y/o bike mechanic and future Mr. August in some Illinois city's Fireman Calendar. His Mom, sister and some others has signs welcoming him, and several of the bikers stopped at the bike shop where Peyton is employed to have some work performed which couldn't be done on the road.
Champaign and Urbana are abutting cities and the University of Illinois straddles the line between them. U of I is a Big Ten school with an enrollment of 44,000, but are hotel is a few miles away.
Wednesday June 12, 2019. Champaign, IL
Everybody is ready to take a day off. I did sleep in a little, but was wide awake at 06:00 AM.
I had a cup of coffee while I sat again with Rick Wardell, who shared that his legs have frequently felt stiff and tired after the rest days until he started riding 8-10 miles on the rest days. I did ride a little today, but only about 3 miles round trip to a nearby Bob Evans for real eggs, instead of hotel scrambled eggs, as well as hash browns, bacon, and 3 hot cakes. This was late enough to qualify as brunch after which I napped for an hour or two. It was a rainy day, so Tom Akins, the Logistics Manager for CrossRoads drove a few of us to the local multiplex to see Rocketman, which was pretty good if you're any kind of Elton John fan. All in all a pretty good rest day.
I'm going to et organized as I watch the last game of the Stanley Cup finals..
